Lake Atitlan

The lake, over 1000 feet deep, is the caldera formed by a volcanic explosion 84,000 years ago, rimmed by towering cones of newer volcanoes. Mayan villages and towns line the shore. Though a rough new road offers some access by land, most are still reached primarily by boat.

American school buses are recycled and used extensively here. This one, from Wythe County, Virginia, will soon be repainted and decorated in high style.
