Lake Atitlan

The lake, over 1000 feet deep, is the caldera formed by a volcanic explosion 84,000 years ago, rimmed by towering cones of newer volcanoes. Mayan villages and towns line the shore. Though a rough new road offers some access by land, most are still reached primarily by boat.

People commute across the lake by boat. From Pana, we took a launch to Casa del Mundo on the north shore, just ahead of a storm.
