Lake Atitlan

The lake, over 1000 feet deep, is the caldera formed by a volcanic explosion 84,000 years ago, rimmed by towering cones of newer volcanoes. Mayan villages and towns line the shore. Though a rough new road offers some access by land, most are still reached primarily by boat.

Santa Catarina. Traditionally, the handmade boats still start as dugout canoes, but large enough trees are now scarse along the shore. Planks are cut with a chain saw, shaped with a machete, and added for more freeboard. The seams are sealed with pine pitch.
