Flores is a town on an island in Lake Peten Itza dating to the 9th century. A causeway now connects the island to the mainland, but travel by boat is still common. People from villages along the shore commute to town by dugout canoe, and fish for Blanco, a delicacy unique to the lake. Most visitors fly into the airport and bypass it on the way to Tikal, but it's well worth a stay.
