This is a video produced for the Washington, DC, jazz group Vector Trio (www.vectortrio.com) Unlike the CD Design project, which was planned, this video just sort of happened.
The band regularly posts new music to their website. Some pieces are previews of material later appearing on albums; some are more ephemeral, showing up for time before sinking back down in the creative ooze. One of my favorite sections is an area called “Basement Tapes.” The material that appears here is all improv - compositions that spontaneously materialize during jam sessions.
I was working with some rough footage shot with a cell phone on a train to New York, while listening to cuts in Basement Tapes. When a piece called “Dream Dogs” started playing, it seemed to fit the mood of the video really well, so I kept replaying it over and over. Before long, without intending to, I was making cuts and transitions influenced by the music - once I realized what was happening I decided to keep going just to see where it went. This video is what came out of it.
