This looks like a roll cloud, which precedes a thunderstorm. As they go through you get the big wind. Great pic.
Thanks, it was indeed on the leading edge of a big thunderstorm cell. A photographer out at Smith Island for the day had an unobstructed view of part of the same storm system. You can see the formation clearly. Pic posted above.
