Postcards from the road.
Sunrise at Freeport Landing
Dawn is very noisy. There’s a rooster. A rooster very near, like next to my head. The sun is barely up, and he is hard at work. Also, something else making a racket I can’t quite place. A sheep? No sleeping through it, rise and shine.

We’ve had snow in March each of the last four years in a row. Maybe more than that, but four seems enough to recognize it’s a thing. Some of those were late March, down the last few days. I even have photos from an April 15th snow in Richmond many years ago.
March Snow, 2013
Yesterday morning, March 4, we woke up to another one. Not much, just a wet layer on trees and pastures and hills. Green grass and daffodils poking through.
But the Peepers are singing back by the pond, and I hear them when I drive through the woods on the way home from work at night.
It will be almost 80 degrees by Wednesday.
This morning it was 5° Fahrenheit. Right now it’s snowing again, with 4-7” expected by morning, followed by sleet, then ice.
But back in December, just a week before Christmas, we had a spell of warmth. I took Caesura for a row on the reservoir. Geese, ducks, herons, turtles.
Nice to remember now I had forgotten it.

Many people look to the outdoors to find peace of mind. For Paul Stiffler, better known as Ponytail Paul, the Appalachian Trail and its thru-hikers have been the therapeutic force needed to turn his life around. Paul has taken on a role as “Trail Angel” to help thru-hikers on their 2,186-mile journey and help himself find a new sense of purpose in the process.
This is one of a series of three short films featuring the stories of people connected to three trails: The Appalachian Trail, Arizona Trail and Bay Area Ridge Trail. Learn more about how Every Trail Connects at www.rei.com/trails

Nice video featuring some friends across the river. Red Knierim of Red and the Romantics and his wife first lived in a yurt in the woods along the river. They recently upgraded to a one room cabin. He was out walking and singing in the snow storm. We walked down to the river from the other side.
I wondered what that sound was.

The high pitched tarp frame was a good idea. We spent Saturday evening and part of Sunday digging out. A lot of digging. Kept the woodstove going on high.
