Blogging has been light lately. Between doing taxes, family obligations, etc., boat progress has been a little sparse. On top of that, there are no dramatic changes during this phase. You just kind of sand and smooth ‘til you’re tired of it, then quit for a few days and start again. At this point, though, the fairing is essentially done.
The next step will be adding skegs, and from here on out the boat will take on weight quickly, so flipping will not be so flippant. Because of the way I’m doing the transoms I need to visualize how the skeg, transom, rudder and hull parts will come together before committing. Hard to do that upside down, so gave me an excuse to turn one up again. Just walking into the room is nice – the smell of cedar, the gentle curves, smooth surfaces – but turning them over is a sensation like the humming of a gong. You just can’t help but go “wow . . .”
Here I can get a good look at another slight modification I’ve made. I extended the prow an inch or two beyond what the plans call for. This gives the bows a slightly longer overhand and finer profile at the sheer.
But, per Roger Crawford’s recommendation, I also added a little fullness forward at the waterline. He says this helps keep the boat from submarining through steep waves and broaching. The result is a lovely hollow entry at the cutwater.
I also tweaked the hind quarter, just a quarter inch, to accentuate the heart shaped transom. The difference is subtle, you can’t really see it in pictures yet, and wouldn’t even show if it weren’t constructed with strip planks, but it’s there. I’m hoping the transoms will pick it up and transfer it visually to the final form.

Can you tell me how you did the curve on the front of it, I’m going to build a aluminum 14ft boat and love the front of your boat.
I would like to know what’s the degree of the front of the boat?
