March Snow

March Snow, 2013

We’ve had snow in March each of the last four years in a row. Maybe more than that, but four seems enough to recognize it’s a thing. Some of those were late March, down the last few days. I even have photos from an April 15th snow in Richmond many years ago.

March Snow, 2015

Yesterday morning, March 4, we woke up to another one. Not much, just a wet layer on trees and pastures and hills. Green grass and daffodils poking through.

But the Peepers are singing back by the pond, and I hear them when I drive through the woods on the way home from work at night.

It will be almost 80 degrees by Wednesday.

Larger Than Life

Amazing. Do follow the link above to see photos of production underway.

The first trailer for Loving Vincent (previously) was just released and it promises stunning visuals in a novel format: the film was created from a staggering 12 oil paintings per second in styles inspired by the famous Dutch painter’s brushstrokes. The upcoming movie will detail the story of Van Gogh’s life leading up to the tumultuous time surrounding his death some 125 years ago. According to the filmmakers, over 100 painters have contributed frames to the ambitious feature-length film that is still in progress at their headquarters in Gdansk, Poland. The film is currently being produced by Oscar-winning studios BreakThru Films and Trademark Films, and you can follow their progress or even get involved yourself on their website. Retro Repost #1

Dan Sutherland in one of his sailing canoes

Thus begins a new series, likely attended with no regard for schedules or continuity, re-posting notable photos from years past.

More often than not, in a place where one fine photo can be taken, many many more are gathered at the same time. Because I’m a lousy editor I post a lot of them at once. Which means that many very fine photos get buried in the deluge.

Less is more sometimes, so now and then (especially in winter, or when weather or circumstances otherwise inhibit acquisition of new photos) I’ll pull out some favorites and give them their due.

These photos are from October 2010. It was a beautiful weekend for the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival in St. Michaels, Maryland. Dan Sutherland was Boatshop Manager at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum then. He was one of the foremost experts in Rushton canoes, and the museum always had several beauties turn out for the show.

He love sailing them, a unique and challenging art form all its own.

These photos are from the middle of the race. Dan enjoying good wind and sunshine on a fine day, on one of his fine canoes.

Red Blizzard

Nice video featuring some friends across the river. Red Knierim of Red and the Romantics and his wife first lived in a yurt in the woods along the river. They recently upgraded to a one room cabin. He was out walking and singing in the snow storm. We walked down to the river from the other side.

I wondered what that sound was.

The high pitched tarp frame was a good idea. We spent Saturday evening and part of Sunday digging out. A lot of digging. Kept the woodstove going on high.

New Year, New Old Boat ~ Return to Edenton

Lightning #2833, in transit

I had a whole week to reconsider. I don’t know with any certainty what shape the boat is actually in, and won’t until I get it back and can crawl all over it, inside and out, poking every potential rot spot with a sharp screwdriver. That much is still unknown. But I can do some research in the meantime.

Of course, I come across some very exciting video online. This one is three fellows in Greece flying along on a crazy fast plane in 25kts of wind:
